A Guide to Renovating Your Home

July 19th, 2017 |

Most homeowners will feel the itch at some point: could I make this space even better? Could I transform this dark room into an open, bright area? Could I have the kitchen I’ve always dreamed of? An entire renovation may seem overwhelming to most but before you give up on your dream, here is a simple guide to renovating your home with minimal stress!

1. Settle on a budget

Do some research on what your project might cost and determine if your finances will allow for what you envision or if you may have to alter your plans to make it affordable. Bear in mind, there are plenty of remodeling cost calculators out there but nothing will compare to getting a personalized custom quote from a local contractor.

2. Choose your team

Are you going to hire a project manager to handle all contractors or will you take on that role? Do you need a designer for your project? Ask questions and read reviews of contractors in your area to find the best.

3. Familiarize yourself with permitting and zoning requirements

Even if you’re hiring a project manager, it’s good to know what to expect! Each city or state will have it’s own established rules and regulations (for example the Boston zoning and planning codes). Searching the internet or visiting your local municipal hall should give you the information you need.

4. Settle on a timeline

If you have a project manager, they will handle all the sub-contractors and let you know the schedule but if you’re in charge, make sure you know their schedules in case you need to be out of the house for some of it.

5. Stay involved with your team

Once work begins, check in with your project manager or contractors. Timelines, cost, and plans may change once they get started and see what they are working with.

6. Perform personal inspections

As your project nears completion, do your own inspections of all the nooks and crannies. Schedule inspections or make sure your project manager has them on the radar.

7. Sit back and enjoy your new space!

The renovation process can be daunting but there are plenty of great resources at your fingertips. Utilize word of mouth and reviews to find a trustworthy expert in your area who can help guide you through the entire process of remodeling.
